Centuries of history and tradition

Dating back to 1060, the Manor of Hougun was listed in the Domesday Book. The name derives from the Old Norse word haugr meaning ‘among the hills’ and this signifies the extent of Norman control in the North West of England right up until 1092, when William II of England claimed Carlisle and northern Cumberland.

  • As Lord of the Manor I highly recommend this place. Stunning views of Coniston and the Mountains/Hills.

From the highest point of Hougun Manor, title pack holders can enjoy outstanding views of the lake and the surrounding hills. There are clear footpaths which you can follow and part of the Great Cumbria Way crosses the land. If you are feeling energetic then you can continue your walk further afield, and there are many other lovely walks in the area. From here you are very near the Old Man of Coniston – a popular spot for walkers - which rises to 803 metres (2,635 feet). Torver Beck river runs through the estate to Coniston Water.
